Here is an email I sent out yesterday – thought I’d share it with y’all.
Hello Moms and Dads,
I got a phone call from the doc today and they said Anna’s kidneys are still big. This isn’t an emergency or anything to get really scared about. That doesn’t stop the worrying, but it does help.
Normal size for the bottom (pelvis) of a kidney at Anna’s age is less than 7 mm. Anna’s kidneys are 13mm and 15mm. So they’re over big. Her bladder is normal and fluid levels are normal. That’s great. Everything else about her is right on track. Basically, they will continue monitoring her (we’ll have another ultrasound in two weeks…) and we’ll do some regular non-stress tests to make sure the rest of her continues working perfectly. (A non-stress test is where i lay around strapped to a fetal heart monitor so they can… well, monitor her for 20 minutes.)
I found a couple articles about bilateral hydronephrosis (“both-kidney lower-end-swelling”) and will post the links below. Keep in mind also, that if she has polycystic kidney disease (50% chance) then it may just be normal to have oversized kidneys while a baby. Such in-depth ultrasounds are relatively new on the baby scene so we don’t know if there’s a correlation there or not.

So… that’s all for now! My Bible study reminds me this week that the “roadblock” to experiencing God’s peace is prayerlessness, so it will be a few weeks full of prayer!
Love you,
Rachel and Brian
