The conversation

went like this…

911 Operator: Portland 911, how may I help you?
Me: Yah, uh, the transformer in front of my house is in the process of blowing up.
911 Op: Can you see smoke, or flames?
Me: Yes. I was just about to call…
911 Op: What is the address you are at sir?
Me:*give address*
911 Op: All right sir we are on the way.

Yep, I had looked out my window to see a shower of sparks come from a local power poll and a big kaboom! rattled my windows. After a short consultation with the neighbor we concluded that we better call sombody and after the second explosion I chose 911.

  • Fire dept. response time ~ 3minutes
  • PGE response time ~ 15 minutes
  • Time until power was restored ~ 3 hours
  • Watching a 300+ pound transformer turn into slag and plasma ~ priceless
