The hole to China

Last night after a dinner of slow-cooker mac, cheese & hotdog, Brian and I pondered what to do with our evening. The dishes were already done except for the two dinner plates, it was stuffy inside and glorious outside. Ok, so that narrowed it down to the rest of the world besides our house. “I know!” I shouted joyously, “let’s clean up the doggy doo!” Needless to say, as we cleaned up doggy do, the burst of joy faded and we were left sitting on the picnic table wondering what to do again.

Well, let’s go dig some where we are going to put the raised bed. Naw. Well, ok. But then, “Wait,” Brian said, “Rachel, wouldn’t it be nice to have a fire pit?”

And the joy returned:

After digging and placing these concrete tubes from our backyard in, we put in some dirt, then water to hold them in place a little…

This morning, I began making the outside bit where we are going to put gravel in as well as these concrete blocks.
The square

Aw man!! 🙁 I didn’t make it quite big enough and the sun is getting too hot already to finish it this morning. (It’s 11 AM now and I’ve been working since 8:30.)

The bricks are too big!

But hey, I made pizza the other night and it was yummy! I love making new recipes!

I can’t believe that I made the square 3 inches too small! But I’m not going out there now… it’s an oven!

No, no oil… that’s just what our dirt looks like when it’s wet. It makes really sticky, slimy, dense mud. Even though it’s in the 90’s out there, it’s still wet! It may not look like clay, but it holds water like it.
