Congratulations, Jordan!!! 🙂 You and your family must be so proud. Niko has learned his first sign in the last few days too – “more.” We’ve been working on it a long time, and he there was once or twice when he’d sign it, but I think now it has really sunk in. Chocolate zucchini cake is always a good motivator… 🙂
Rex’s first sign was eat as well and I remember how excited we were when it finally clicked. It took about 4-5 months of intense work to get him to start using it independently. Since then, he has added around two dozen signs to his repertoire which comes to about 1.3 new signs per month, so his speed in acquiring them has picked up.
As far as signing “more”, we were advised to steer clear of that sign because it becomes a catch-all for kids and prevents them from being more specific. So, when you start working on your next sign with him, think about choosing something that’s highly motivating for Jordan and for which he can sign specifically. Rex’s second sign was music.
Thanks for the input, Viviane! That is helpful. May I ask what some of Rex’s other first signs are? I wouldn’t mind knowing what his 24 signs are…. it will help me narrow down which to focus on practicing. I bet music is one of Jordan’s early signs too!
We’re just a typical, atypical family in the Pacific Northwest. We homeschool, love Jesus and are learning as we go.
We have three beautiful daughters, born in 2007, 2009 and 2012 and two handsome sons, born in 2009 and 2013. (My sons are Bulgarian – arriving home in 2011 and 2017. If you’re curious about Bulgarian adoptions, I blogged about our experience.).
After learning about the need for adoptive families of children with disabilities, (and here and here) we began the process to adopt our son Jordan (who has Down Syndrome). He arrived home on December 3rd, 2011!. We were in process for Daniel (who has arthrogryposis) January-October 2017. You can see photos from our trips to Bulgaria by looking at June and Nov/Dec 2011 archives and May and October 2017.
Oh those eyebrows, the charm, the signing. It’s too much for me, I’m having a sugar overload!
Wonderful to see him learning!! He is off to greater things!!
Great job, Jordan!
This made me smile! He looks so happy and proud of himself!
