Silliness at the dinner table:
Hi! Just a friendly family update. It snowed a dusting overnight Tuesday and Wednesday last week and the girls were bundled up and playing in it by 7:30am each morning. Gotta get the playing in before it melts at 9! haha They were pretty cute. And cold. It’s also planting time for us! The first crop is in. Crop 1 of 3+ of snap peas, radishes, lettuce, chard, spinach, onions, parsnips, carrots, and bok choy. We harvested parsnips that I planted last fall and they were way bigger underground than we thought! Mashed parsnips tonight and for a little while! (they are yummy mashed) If you’ve never read the new Square Foot Gardening book, we found it is a good match for our gardening skill level and our yard size. (and the new one is quite a bit different than the old one) We’ll be trying to grow more things vertically this year – tomatoes, zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers, and peas of course. Hope things grow as well as we hope!
One thing that hasn’t grown well for us is tomatoes. This year’s plan: plant the tomatoes in stages too (every two weeks, starting in late April or May) – that way at least a few of the plants are bound to thrive and not be killed by early planting and long, cold springs.
Enjoy the pictures! (click to see them larger)
- Tromping around with smiles
- Tromp, tromp, tromp!
- Throwing a soggy snowball at mom in the window!
- Basket case! (She is jumping while wearing her laundry basket)
- Giggle fest!
- This girl brings us so much laughter!!! (Grammy, I think she looks so much like Jennifer sometimes!)
- Anna being an amazing big sister. She's talking to Jordan here and trying to get him to eat a crumb of muffin)
- Back yard - side 1
- Back yard - side two
- The 3' x 8' beds with a 7' or 8' trellis. The peas go on these trellises... along with some other stuff. Also, there are/will be a million parsnips, carrots and radishes in these beds.
- The 5' trellises. These will primarily hold tomatoes. The other squares will have lettuce, spinach, chard, onions, bok choy... ummm... peppers? Can't remember!
- Looking for worms to feed the chickens.
- Loving lounging in the warm sunshine...
- First time in the back yard! First time playing in the grass at his own home.
- Handsome boy.
So fun to see siblings playing together! Anna looks like she’s doing a great job of engaging Jordan, and Maggie’s laugh is just pure joy. The green grass looks a little odd to me though… We just got a dump of 13-18 cm of snow last night. It’s actually quite welcome, as the snow has been rather sparse this winter. It’s also fun that it’s only a few degrees below zero (Celsius), so it’s warm enough to play outside. Good job working on the garden already! You are inspiring.
Looks like a nice little gardening project! Love to see the kids involved, such a good family hobby!
